What we cover

The Universe covers space flight, astronomy, cosmology and physics for readers who did not study any of it. The commitment is to explain the reasoning, not just the result: what was measured, how, how confident the researchers are, and what would change their minds. Australian readers get the southern sky, which is where much of the interesting work is pointed, along with a sky guide written for these latitudes: a month by month view on the site, and a shorter note on the nights immediately ahead in the weekly email.

How we work

We read the paper, not only the press release, and we link to it. Preprints are labelled as not yet peer reviewed, and we say so in the story rather than the footnotes. Uncertainty is reported as part of the finding, not buried. Artists' impressions and simulations are captioned as such and never presented as photographs. Curious is the tone, credulous is not: extraordinary claims get the same questions whoever is making them. We are a publisher and not a research body: we run no telescopes, hold no grants, accredit and assess nobody, and have no commercial relationship with any research institution, university or space agency.

Corrections

Corrections are published on the story with a dated note describing exactly what was wrong. Where a result is later revised, retracted or fails to replicate, we go back and update the original piece rather than leaving it standing. Readers can report an error through the contact page, including scientists who think we have misread their work.
